Graffiti  Venice

I am not pro or anti-graffiti. The images in the collection are just working with what is there.
What the graffiti said was not important, but the intention of line and form is what interested me. The images are composed to take advantage of the visual elements including the surfaces and water stains.

After spending a week in Venice, being surrounded by aesthetic beauty everywhere, the graffiti caught my eye. I was not trying to do a photo project, this just found me and I went with it. The gorgeous, time worn walls show the ongoing cycle decay and restoration along with graffiti are the backdrop to most of the streets of the city.

The graffiti is often ignored and overlooked as just the background, however in a city with streets like a maze, I found I was subconsciously using the graffiti as a landmark for where I was. After days of museums and fine architecture I found the graffiti to have line, form, intention that reflects the fluidity of the water that is such a part of Venice. You can see the line of Miro, the form relationships of De Kooning, the color field of Rothko, and whatever other relationships you want to make.
