NUDE DIALOG

An Exhibition of Figure Photography by Richard Cummings

October 20, 2006 - Boulder, CO - Photographer Richard (Rick) Cummings unveils recent works of figure photography November 3, 4 and 5 at the Body Form Studio and Gallery, 1045 Pearl St. in downtown Boulder. The opening of "Nude Dialog," 6 - 10 p.m. on November 3, coincides with other "First Friday" gallery openings in Boulder. Additional viewings hours run 12 - 4 p.m. on November 4 and 5. Admission is free.

Rick is among the foremost Boulder-area fine art photographers focusing on the human form. The rich, compelling works on exhibit are the expression of a "visual conversation" between photographer and model. The model may interpret or expand on Rick's ideas, while fortuitous shadows or lines may inspire him to suggest evolutions in the model's poses.

For the past 18 years, Rick has worked extensively with the human form as photographic subject matter; he also teaches classes in fine art figure photography and portraiture. He says, "The most consistent theme throughout art history has been the human body. Everyone can relate to having a body, and we feel the forms and shapes it creates. Nudes bypass our intellect and go directly into our subconscious."

Rick concentrates on the body from the neck down. "Once you include the face, we tend to focus on the individual's identity instead of our universal relationship to the body." He usually works in his downtown Boulder studio to concentrate on pure form with controlled lighting, but some of the images in "Nude Dialog" were captured in settings such as the beaches and waterfalls of Costa Rica, the rocks and rivers of Colorado, and even a machine shop.

Rick's images emphasize uncommon perspectives on the body. 'The biggest complement for me is, "Wow! I know it's a body, but I can't quite figure it out." This reaffirms my sense that the human form still has an important role in modern art and photography.'

Some of Rick's work is abstract, and he often breaks the basic rule dictating that the photographer look through the lens and hold the camera still. "By giving up a little control, you gain unique compositions and forms with deemphasized details, which can draw the viewer more intimately into the image."
